Update on the 2016 Austrian Presidential Election
Repetition of run-off on October 2, 2016
The Austrian Constitutional Court has decided that the run-off election for federal president on May 22, 2016 has to be repeated. For the full statement of the High Court: https://www.vfgh.gv.at/cms/vfgh-site/attachments/9/6/5/CH0003/CMS1467363707042/press_release_07-01-16.pdf. The date for the repetition of the run-off election has been set to October 2, 2016. Persons who were eligible to vote in the preceding general election on April 24, 2016 and the runoff on May 22, 2016 are eligible to vote. Austrian expats who were not registered for an absentee ballot at their home municipality by March 24, 2016 are not eligible to vote on October 2, 2016.
In order to cast your vote abroad, eligible Austrian citizens may continue to utilize the possibility of an absentee ballot, which can be ordered through your municipal elections office anytime as of now. Should you utilize a long-term absentee ballot subscription, the ballot will be automatically sent to your address. Please ensure that your municipal elections office in Austria has your correct address on file. Ballots will be sent out by the municipalities some four weeks before Election Day.

If you have not done so yet but want to be prepared for other upcoming elections in Austria you can register at a “Wählerevidenz” ANYTIME, it will keep you as a registered voter for 10 years. Click here for the application form and guidelines. To be registered is the prerequisite that you can apply then for an absentee ballot for an upcoming election in Austria.
